Prostate Cancer

Info about PCa.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. (Source: DKG). However the chance for healing is very good if the disease is recognized during the screening. Then our patients usually can choose between different treatment methods according to their personal requirements.

If the cancer is recognized early, it is curable

Behind prostate cancer there are malign cells in the tissues, which are formed in the chestnut-sized prostate. Prostate cancer is especially common in Europe and North America, while men in China and Japan relative rarely get sick in this disease (source: In Germany, annually more than 60,000 men get sick in prostate cancer (source: Robert Koch Institute, 2008). Meanwhile a lot of risk factors have been demonstrated- and some misbelieves are refuted: so prostate cancer is not a disease of old age. The youngest patient we have cared in the PZNW was 37 years old at the time of the surgery. Most of our patients, who suffer in prostate cancer, are between 55-65 years old. According to the German Cancer Society, the incidence of prostate cancer between the 50th and 85th age increases up to 40 times. Among other things, the following risk factors play an important role:

  • Genetic predisposition: prostate cancer within close relationship increases the risk of the emergence of prostate cancer. So if a family member already had prostate cancer, we should take the advantage of the screening possibilities before the age of 45.
  • Nutrition: high-fat and low-fiber food, as well as high red meat consumption increase the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Vitamin D deficiency: A deficiency of vitamin D, which is primarily caused by ultraviolet solar radiation, favors the emergence of prostate cancer.
  • Metallic cadmium: farmers and those workers who work with metal and have contact with metallic cadmium have higher risk for the emergence of prostate cancer.

Sexual behaviors, viruses and other factors also can play important role. However here we are still in lack of reliable results.
